2× vs 4× Upscale: Which Should You Choose?

2× doubles width and height — roughly four times the pixel count. It is the everyday choice for sharpening product shots, profile photos, screenshots, and blog headers without creating enormous files.

4× quadruples each dimension — roughly sixteen times the pixels. File sizes grow quickly, processing takes longer, and the visual leap is dramatic when the source is small or you will print large.

On this site both ratios use the same upload flow. Your free limits and pass benefits follow image count, not ratio — so choosing 4× does not consume “extra free credits,” but it does create heavier downloads.

The photo already looks decent at phone size and you only need a modest boost for Instagram, Shopify zoom, or LinkedIn banners.

You are batching dozens of catalog images and care about turnaround time and storage.

You will do a light crop afterward and still have enough pixels left for the web.

You are printing A4, A3, canvas, or poster sizes and the lab asks for higher pixel dimensions.

You are restoring old low-resolution photos or AI-generated images that started small.

You need to crop tightly on a face or product detail and still keep a large enough output.

Write down the final use: web thumbnail, marketplace zoom, or physical print.

If print: convert target inches × ~300 DPI into required pixels, then pick the smallest ratio that clears that number.

If web: start with 2×, download, check at 100% zoom on a sharp monitor, then only re-run at 4× if edges still look soft.

For mixed batches, process critical hero images at 4× and the rest at 2× so you do not over-generate storage.
